The Well of Creation

Written by Roscoe

From the point of view of an outside observer, the cavern looks like an ordinary, icy cave. However, the true nature of the cavern is far more sacred and important than that.

This cavern was formed only mere days after the planet of Roost itself came to be; before even the Era of Divine Peace. The legend of this planet is such that, when the top half of Hexdove collided with the planet, the fresh cool water of the area rushed into the incredibly hot beak and head of the meteoric being which had just shot through the atmosphere of the newly born planet. This reaction of cold water meeting the scalding heat of the bird's remains, legend says, caused the vestige of this being to crystalize. As time passed, the crystals hardened. And once the chaos of Roost's birth had ceased, all of Hexdove's skeleton and nervous system had transformed into an enormous crystalized cave system with one entry point, an eye socket, remaining above the surface of the water.

As Roost aged from hatchling to nestling, chick, and fledgling, the crystal cavern stood undiscovered. That is, until the first small tribe of northern Hexdove happened upon it when exploring the region. The tribe leader assured the rest of the tribe that he would investigate the cavern. After tying a rope around his waist and entrusting members of his tribe to keep him from falling, he let his faith take him into the depths of the cavern. Entering the opening in the planet, the leader was speechless. The cavern, despite being on a continent in the frigid north was....warm! Uncomfortably warm for the amount of furs and layers the tribe leader was wearing. And it wasn't dark either, but luminescent. Not only was light refracting through the crystals of the chambers, but each and every crystal had, at its center, an opalescent mote of light that moved and shifted like the flame on a candle and yet seemed source-less. Stunned beyond words or even understanding, the tribe leader delved deeper and deeper into the caves.

With each corner or passable crevasse he ventured beyond, he saw the same thing: an indescribable soft rainbow of color and possibility. However, as he spent more time in the cavern, the leader began to see visions of things beyond the world they knew. Visions of the sky and stars from which the Creators came flooded his mind. With these visions came knowledge of magics and of the planes outside the material. Startled by these visions, the leader emerged from the cavern with the help of the tribesmen who still anchored his rope. He took the next couple of days to explain what he saw in the cavern to the rest of his tribe. This was how the leaders of the Hexdove tribes came to be known as the Starseers. The tribe and Starseer came to call the cavern they happened upon The Well of Creation because of its strange, natural "powers" it was able to gift to those who entered.

From that point on, approximately around year 90, the title of Starseer was passed down through an initiation ritual where a child of Hexdove, nominated by the Starseer's court, would enter the cavern and face Hexdove's "judgement." The Well of Creation doesn't always show what it showed that first Starseer. Sometimes the lights in the crystals flicker and flash, and what would later be known as wild magic surges, would cause the child to lose the chance to earn the Starseer role; often times because they would not survive the surge or even vanish within the cavern.

As time moved forward and peoples not native to Hexdove came to learn about the Well of Creation, interested parties tried to diplomatically gain entry to it. All attempts were denied as the cavern protected as the most sacred and treasured location to all of Hexdove- - for both North and South. Folks throughout Roost have since caught wind of the "legend" of the cavern, and it's know by other names depending on where you are. Conflux Cavern, The Great Crystal Labyrinth, Hexdove's Heart, etc. and to this day it is a source of mystery, wonder, and questionable desire.
