The Boatswain's Story
Art by Regin Wellander
The sailor known as the Boatswain began his life as Lophius, the son of a minor Triton noble named Krillos.
Lophius held a number of jobs in Victoria, from pastry chef to prizefighter, but it was as a salvager that he discovered his true calling. While picking through the remains of a wreck with his dolphin friend, Sully, he came across a sole survivor: a Tortle privateer named Preston. Grateful for the rescue, Preston offered Lophius a job as a gunner's mate aboard his next ship: The Queen Dowager. Although Lophius hated to leave his father behind, he eagerly accepted the offer.
For years, Lophius thrived in his new life, hunting pirates and keeping the good people of Victoria (and Sub-Victoria) safe from invasion. In record time, he rose through the ranks to become a boatswain, a job that carried with it the responsibility of keeping his beloved Queen Dowager in good working condition, and making sure that the crew was both diligent and content when they were out at sea. All that came to an end when Captain Preston did the unthinkable: he accepted an offer to join the most nefarious pirate army in the region.

Although Lophius tried to spur the crew of the Queen Dowager to mutiny, he was ultimately unsuccessful. Cast aside and left for dead in the middle of an arid, desert island, he eventually crawled his way back to the nurturing sea and escaped with his life but not much else.
Vowing to save the Queen Dowager from a life of villainy, Lophius dedicated his life to finding his ship and punishing those responsible for kidnapping her. Drifting from dock to dock, Lophius barged into any drinking hole or leisure house that Preston's pirates were known to frequent, demanding information about the QD's whereabouts, and fighting anyone who was stingy on the details.
Gradually, he made a name for himself as The Boatswain, a ghostly legend (or local eccentric, depending on who you ask) who haunts the harbors, looking for his lost ship. Woe befall any pirate who crosses his path after dusk!
